Data Center Supply Chain Tracker
Current pricing trends and order-backlog direction for the non-GPU physical inputs to data-center construction — copper, fiber, transformers, switchgear, and steel. Pricing and the backlog proxy update automatically from U.S. government data (BLS Producer Price Index and Census M3, via FRED); transformer lead times are curated from public government and national-lab reporting. Every series and source is listed in the tracker’s methodology panel.
Sources & methodology
Pricing (auto-updating). BLS Producer Price Index series, fetched server-side from FRED (public keyless CSV), cached ~24h; the underlying data is monthly. MoM and YoY are computed from the returned history. Rising index = supply strain (rust); falling = easing.
- Copper wire & cable — BLS PPI, FRED series
WPU10260314, monthly. - Fiber-optic cable — BLS PPI, FRED series
PCU335921335921, monthly. - Power & distribution transformers — BLS PPI, FRED series
WPU117409, monthly. - Switchgear & switchboard — BLS PPI, FRED series
WPU117522, monthly. - Steel mill products — BLS PPI, FRED series
WPU1017, monthly.
Backlog direction (auto-updating proxy). U.S. Census Bureau M3
unfilled orders, electrical-equipment manufacturing, FRED series U35CUO,
monthly. This is a backlog direction proxy — not a lead-time figure.
Lead times (curated, not live). Ranges from public U.S. government and national-lab reporting, each stamped with an as-of date and source. Materials with no allowed public lead-time source are shown pricing-only.
- Large power: ~36 months (up to 60) — Jul 2024, DOE, Large Power Transformer Resilience Report to Congress.
- Distribution: ~30 weeks (down from ~2 yrs in 2024) — Q2 2025, CRS R48933, Electricity Distribution Transformers.
- Commodity context (not shown as tiles): global copper
PCOPPUSDMand aluminumPALUMUSDM(IMF via FRED).
Honest ceiling: pricing and the backlog proxy refresh on their own from government indices. Lead times cannot — no government or free trade-org live feed exists — so they are a Census backlog direction proxy plus periodically curated ranges stamped with dates and public sources. Not live lead-time data.
